Are there gorillas at Howletts?
Howletts is home to 29 Western lowland gorillas, split into different family and individual groups.
Are there gorillas at Port Lympne?
At Port Lympne we have 17 Western lowland gorillas in 3 different areas. The Palace of the Apes houses a family group of 12; a silverback, 8 adult females and 3 young males. All gorillas (of which there are 4 sub-species) are Critically Endangered.
Are there gorillas in a zoo?
No, mountain gorillas can’t survive in zoos. They are only live in mountainous forested areas of Central-East Africa. In the 1960s and 70s, several attempts were made to capture live mountain gorillas and start a captive population.
What zoo is better Howletts or Port Lympne?
Howletts is the smaller and flatter of the parks at 90 acres and is therefore more accessible. Port Lympne lies in 600 acres of hilly terrain and as a result is quite steep in places. While our safaris are not running due to social distancing restrictions, we recommend Howletts for our disabled visitors.

Welcome back! Day visitor safaris are available to add on to your walking route ticket for £6pp. Please note that the South American, African and Asian Experiences are only accessible via safari truck, therefore some animals will not visible from the walking routes of the main park.
How much can a gorilla pick up?
Any adult gorilla can lift up to 450 kilograms, not with a body size that can go as high as 200kgs. One bite from a mountain gorilla will have you running for your dear life. Gorillas have large canines that give bites that are incomparable to any from those carnivores like lions and crocodiles.
Can you smoke at Howletts?
We enjoyed our full-day visit to Howletts Wild Animal Park. The emphasis is on exhibiting species that are endangered and benefit from conservation efforts. Enclosures are large and naturalistic. Smoking is allowed only in the car park.”
How many gorillas have been released from Howletts?
Thanks to the generosity of visitors like you, we – in conjunction with The Aspinall Foundation (charity number 326567) – have released more than 70 gorillas back to the wild and our released gorillas have had over 35 wild births! In Indonesia, we have released 33 Javan gibbons, 12 Javan grizzled langurs and 90 Javan ebony langurs.
Who is the boss of Howletts Zoo in Canterbury?
IN 2014, Damian Aspinall, boss of PORT LYMPNE and HOWLETTS zoos, both near Canterbury, attempted to return a family of ten gorillas to the wilds of Gabon in central Africa. Almost all of the animals were killed – most likely by other gorillas – in an incident described as a “bloodbath”.

Are there any zoos that have gorillas in them?
Thankfully, it wasn’t long before the foundation had enough money to open another zoo: Port Lympne Wild Animal Park. Both of the parks are home to endangered and rare animals. They soon set up an orphaned gorillas project that worked with the Plateau Bateke National Park in Gabon.
