Can the cold make your engine knock?

Can the cold make your engine knock?

A cold piston knock for up to a minute and a half after starting a cold engine may be normal. This may be due to increased clearance between the pistons and cylinders. But once the engine warms up, the knocking noise should disappear. If it doesn’t something bigger could be at play.

What is a cold start knock?

Sticky valve lifters are a common source of cold start noise that is frequently referred to as a knock, but it is more of a loud ticking sound. If you are running oil that is a higher viscosity, it will take the oil longer to circulate in the engine, providing coverage to the valves and lifters, and other components.

Why is my Mini Cooper making a weird noise?

BMW Mini Coopers can develop a rattling noise, though many people may initially be unaware of the cause. The rattling noise coming from the engine known as the “Death Rattle Noise” is caused by the timing chain. The timing chain may need to be replaced before it snaps and causes serious damage to the engine.

Why is my engine knocking when cold?

This cold start noise is caused by a carbon buildup on the crown of the piston and roof of the combustion chamber, causing physical contact and a relatively sharp click at the very top of the piston travel. Both noises tend to abate as the engine warms up.

Read more about this law suit here. Some of the early production Mini Cooper S models have been known to exhibit the ‘Cold Start Rattle’. This typically occurs when the engine is cold and makes the sounds like an old diesel engine upon startup.

What causes the Super knocking fault on a Mini Cooper?

In this video you will see a short explanation of how to fix the super knocking fault (2d52) on a Mini Cooper S R56. This is a very common fault on the R56 and is caused by carbon build up in the intake valves. To solve this we blow walnut shells into the intake valves. Loading…

Why does my Mini Cooper make a rattling noise when it starts?

In some cases, the tensioner spring force may be too low. Depending on the severity of the wear, it may lead to a rattling noise when starting the engine cold or when the engine is idling. The timing chain tensioner internal tolerances are not consistent. The tensioner will need to be inspected before removal.
